Travel plans do not always go as expected. You might need to attend an important meeting, handle a family emergency, or extend your vacation. Whatever the reason, knowing how to change flight tickets after booking can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress.
Fortunately, most major airlines allow passengers to modify eligible reservations online. Depending on your airline and ticket type, you may be able to change your departure date, flight time, or destination without paying a separate change fee.
However, airline policies are different. Some tickets offer flexible changes, while others have restrictions and additional charges. Understanding the rules before modifying your reservation can help you avoid unexpected expenses.
This guide from Search My Trip explains how to change a flight ticket after booking, including online steps, airline policies, possible fees, and tips for finding affordable alternatives.
Can You Change a Flight Ticket After Booking?
Yes, most airlines allow passengers to change eligible flight tickets after booking. However, the available options depend on your ticket conditions and airline policies.
You may be able to modify:
- Flight departure date
- Flight departure time
- Arrival or departure airport
- Travel destination
- Connecting flight details
- Return flight schedule
For example, if you booked a flight from New York to Los Angeles but need to travel two days later, your airline may allow you to select another available flight.
Keep in mind that changing your flight does not always mean the process is free. You may need to pay the difference between your original ticket price and the new fare.
How to Change a Flight Ticket Online: Step-by-Step Process
Most airlines provide an online booking management system that makes changing reservations straightforward.
Step 1: Visit the Airline’s Official Website
Open the official website of the airline where you booked your flight.
Look for a section labeled:
- Manage Booking
- My Trips
- Manage Reservations
- Change Flight
You can usually access this section without creating a new account.
Step 2: Enter Your Booking Information
Enter the required details to locate your reservation.
You may need:
- Booking confirmation number
- Passenger’s last name
- Registered email address
- Ticket number
Make sure the information matches your original booking confirmation.
Step 3: Select the Flight You Want to Change
After opening your reservation, review your current travel details.
Select the flight you want to modify and choose the available flight change option.
If your reservation includes multiple flights or passengers, check which parts of the itinerary will be affected.
Step 4: Choose Your New Flight
Search for available flights based on your preferred travel date and time.
Compare the available departure times, connections, ticket prices, and travel duration.

Your airline may display:
- Applicable change fees
- Difference in airfare
- Additional taxes
- Updated ticket conditions
Even when an airline does not charge a change fee, the new flight may cost more than the original reservation.
Step 6: Confirm Your Updated Booking
Once you are satisfied with the changes, complete any required payment and confirm the new flight.
The airline will generally send an updated itinerary or confirmation email.
Save the new ticket information and verify that your travel details are correct.

How Much Does It Cost to Change a Flight?
The total cost of changing a flight depends on several factors.
These include the airline, ticket type, travel route, and availability of alternative flights.
For example, suppose your original flight costs $250 and your new flight costs $320.
If your airline does not charge a separate change fee, you would generally pay the $70 fare difference.
However, restricted ticket types may carry additional charges.
Can You Change a Flight Within 24 Hours of Booking?
Many airlines offer flexible cancellation options shortly after booking.
For qualifying flights covered by U.S. Department of Transportation rules, airlines must generally provide either a 24-hour free cancellation option or a 24-hour reservation hold when the flight is booked at least seven days before departure.
However, this rule does not guarantee that passengers can change their flights for free.
Some airlines offer flexible changes during their own risk-free booking periods.
If you recently purchased your ticket, review the airline’s specific policy. In some situations, canceling an eligible reservation and booking another flight may be more affordable.
Best Tips to Change a Flight Without Extra Fees
Although not every ticket qualifies for a free change, the following tips can help reduce additional expenses.
- Check your ticket type: Flexible fares generally have fewer restrictions.
- Make changes early: More flight options may be available before departure.
- Compare alternative dates: Traveling one day earlier or later may reduce airfare.
- Review airline notifications: Schedule changes or cancellations may provide additional rebooking options.
- Avoid missing your flight: A no-show may cause you to lose the remaining ticket value.
- Compare the final cost: Check both the change price and the cost of booking a new ticket.
A little planning can help you find better flight options without unnecessary expenses.
