Most people start out with the usual suspects – a few goldfish, maybe a betta. Then, after a while, they want something a bit different. That’s usually when they start looking at exotic freshwater fish for sale, and honestly, it’s easy to see why. These fish look different, move differently, and often behave in ways you just don’t get from the common species.
CU Aquatics has been asked about exotics a lot over the years, so here’s a proper look at some popular species, what they actually need in a tank, and how to keep them happy.
Popular Exotic Freshwater Fish Species
There isn’t one single “exotic” fish – it’s more of a category, and a few names come up again and again with customers:
- Siamese Algae Eater – Genuinely useful as well as good-looking. It’ll graze on algae all day and doesn’t cause any bother.
- Bumblebee Goby – Tiny, stripy, and a bit of a character. Tends to potter about near the bottom rather than swim in open water.
- Glass Fish – The see-through body is the whole appeal here. People often add one just because visitors can’t stop looking at it.
- Leopard Bush Fish – Spotted, calm, and a slower mover than most. Not flashy in the way you’d expect, but striking once you notice it.
- Black Ghost Knife Fish – A proper standout. Long, dark, and glides rather than swims. This one’s usually kept by people who’ve been at the hobby a while.
Each of these fish has its own quirks, so it’s worth reading up a bit before buying – not every exotic suits every tank.
Aquarium Requirements for Exotic Species
Here’s the thing with exotic fish – they tend to be fussier than the standard tank fish, and skipping the setup work usually causes problems down the line. A few things worth getting right first:
- Tank size. The Black Ghost Knife Fish, for example, grows a lot bigger than people expect, so a small tank just won’t do.
- Water conditions. Temperature, pH, hardness – these need to be close to what the fish would find in the wild, not just “roughly okay.”
- Filtration. A decent filter matters more with exotics. Sensitive species really don’t cope well with dirty or unstable water.
- Tank mates. Some exotics are territorial, some are shy, and putting the wrong two fish together rarely ends well.
Get this part right before buying, and the rest tends to fall into place.
Feeding and Daily Care
Feeding isn’t one-size-fits-all with these fish. The Siamese Algae Eater will happily nibble algae and plant matter without much fuss. The Bumblebee Goby, on the other hand, wants live or frozen food like brine shrimp – it won’t really bother with flakes.
A few habits that help:
- Feed smaller amounts a couple of times a day, rather than one big feed.
- Keep an eye on leftover food – it sits and rots, and that affects water quality fast.
- Match the food to how the fish actually eats in the wild, not just what’s easiest to buy.
On top of that, regular water testing and partial water changes go a long way, particularly with the more delicate exotics.
