Moving in Auckland may seem relatively simple from afar, but it’s often a different story when it comes to the real deal. The run through your head: “I’ll call a truck, get a few friends in to help, and it’ll be all over by the middle of the day”. Only then the couch won’t fit past the corner in the stairwell, the loading zone is already occupied, and the commute from the North Shore to anywhere in the east takes half the day in Auckland traffic. If you’ve moved in the city before, you’ll probably find yourself nodding your head to that last line.
You just knew we’d write this at some stage. Time to call the professionals movers and packers in Auckland. Don’t get us wrong, you can move yourself, but getting in and out of lots of tricky places, coupled with building restrictions and other drivers, means it takes a lot longer, and costs a lot more.
The Traps That Trip You Up
Auckland isn’t a level place and many homes weren’t designed with large trucks in mind. Steep driveways on the North Shore, long carries in West Auckland and narrow streets in Ponsonby, Grey Lynn or Mt Eden all add precious minutes to your move. High-rise apartments have different requirements. Usually you need to book the service lift well before your move, days even weeks in advance, and move within a designated window. If you miss it, you’ll be waiting for the lift or lowering all your belongings down the main stairwell while others pass in the other direction.
Sometimes a truck can’t fit into a tight street or must park in a designated loading zone, requiring a temporary permit. Or you might have to carry something farther than usual. But seasoned removers are familiar with the streets that are special because they’re a no parking zone, which roads have clearway restrictions after 4pm, and how to plan the best route to avoid the notorious rush from 7-9 am and 3-6pm. No GPS can do that.
Why Packing Tends to Be the Real Job
We tend to obsess about the moving bit and give short shrift to the packing. Sure, wrapping a few boxes is straightforward. But padded glassware, artwork, TVs, furniture to prevent scratches is a different matter. To do it properly, you need some packaging you don’t have around the house (double wall boxes, proper blankets, corner protectors, bubble wrap) and a fair bit of it, and the time to do it. A lot of DIY moves begin with the best of intentions and a fairly empty house and end with half the house still unpacked on the morning of the move.
Professionals ‘pack it as a system’ Fragile items are wrapped, marked, furniture covered, everything loaded without shifting. Some clients will only request the packing service and choose to load the boxes into their own vehicle. Alternatively clients may request a full service, including unpacking at the new location. Most of the time, at the least this will prove cost-effective, even more so if trying to juggle work and children. Experienced packing and/or moving teams will also be able to spot the potential issues – such as furniture that will not go through the doorway at the other end – in advance.
What Actually Changes When You Hire Someone Who Knows the City
Fixed price eliminates one of the most stressful aspects. Nobody appreciates being hit with last-minute costs for stairs, long distances or fuel on the actual move. Moving crews that always safeguard floors and doorways prepare you for a less contentious settling-up process with landlords or body corporates afterward. NZ insurance conditions for goods in transit are another benefit; an “it’s covered if it’s broken” statement is of limited help.
For specialty items is a good indicator of whether a company has done this work before. Pianos, pool tables or awkward office furniture all need the correct equipment and the expertise in how to use it. The same applies for intercity moves. Moving between Auckland and Wellington or the South Island has its own complexities beyond just the drive, such as the methods of cargo-strapping, access to the ferry and realistic delivery times that a professional mover will understand rather than hazard a guess at.
A Few Things That Make the Day Run Smoother
Tell us about the access when you’re getting your quote. If your driveway is very steep, you have several flights of stairs, a high-rise or the truck can’t get close to the door, these will affect how long the move will take and how many people or what size truck you’ll need. Time of day and size of truck are especially important for apartments: most require notice and some have restrictions.
Timing can have a bigger impact than you think. Mid-week mornings are typically less congested than weekend mornings, and leaving traffic when it’s really heavy can significantly increase your commute time. Declutter before you move for free, then pay for volume when you toss away things you don’t want that take up space you don’t need. Don’t let your move-in date and your move-out date be staggered, or be overcharged for double rentals.
Equally important, find out what happens to the little things: the packing materials the company uses, whether the flooring is protected, and if the quote covers everything or if you’ll discover extra costs down the line. An easy move or a difficult one comes down to whether the moving crew has already experienced the common Auckland problems.
Many people still get by with a little help from their friends and a rental truck and sometimes, they’re still happy with the deal. Many have told me that the majority of the bill came down to the time and hassle rather than the actual dollars saved. Once you’re letting people who do this all the time take care of the heavy lifting, wrapping, lift coordination and traffic timing, it feels way better.
If you’re moving to Auckland or beyond, a simple quote from a team who already knows what makes this city different is often the easiest next move. We do house and apartment moves, packing and unpacking, commercial moves, one-off item moves, and even moves between cities, with set pricing and a crew who knows the ins and outs of city access and traffic. Learn more on our Auckland page, or just call us for a free quote. Many people find this simpler than trying to assemble friends, a truck, and your building’s regulations all at the same time.
